Did you know that the first toilets were manufactured 4,000 years ago, but despite advances in sanitation, 946 million people still have to go to the toilet in the open, particularly in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. 340,000 children under the age of five die of diarrheal diseases caused by the lack of hygiene every year.
Saturday 19 November is the official World Toilet Day (www.worldtoiletday.org), established by the United Nations to encourage people to talk about toilets (or lack of) but to also take action to help end the global sanitation crisis.
Roca supports World Toilet Day through the We Are Water Foundation, (http://www.wearewater.org/), a non-profit organisation which raises awareness and essential funds for relevant projects in developing countries. Since its inception, the Foundation has carried out more than 25 cooperation projects, helping over 220,000 people and communities across the world.
On World Toilet Day, Roca London Gallery is launching a short video with digital design magazine Dezeen to help break the taboo.
