Tonwell Tower Transformed: Brutalist Landmark Reborn with Roca’s Sustainable Design Innovations

Tonwell Tower, the Grade II listed 1960s water tower in Hertfordshire, has been reimagined as a contemporary, sustainability focused retreat—beautifully showcasing several of Roca’s most design forward bathroom collections.

Led by industrial designer Matt Grey and his family, the four year transformation preserves the tower’s striking brutalist silhouette while introducing warm, 1960s inspired interiors and over 1,600 sq ft of thoughtfully crafted living space. Bathrooms play a central role in shaping the calm, immersive guest experience.

At the heart of the design is the main ensuite, fitted with Roca’s sculptural Beyond collection in matt white—including the Beyond Totem basin, freestanding bath shower mixer and WC. The soft curves reflect the tower’s cylindrical form, enhancing the sense of harmony throughout.

Sustainability is woven into every detail, highlighted by the inclusion of Roca’s innovative W+W combined washbasin and WC. This clever system filters and reuses basin water to refill the toilet cistern, reducing water consumption without compromising on style or comfort.
