A beacon of cultural and scientific progress, the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, has received numerous accolades since its opening, including recognition for its remarkable architectural design by Dezeen and Design Boom. Designed by Ennead Architects with Thomas Wong as the lead designer, this architectural marvel symbolises the integration of science and culture. Roca's involvement in this project highlights its expertise in delivering high performance, aesthetically pleasing solutions tailored to high traffic areas.
Museum's architecture beautifully captures the essence of the galaxy and seamlessly integrates with urban ecology. The use of arches on the façade and the winding greenery surrounding the museum represent the spiral arms of the galaxy. Inside, the proportional relationship of the planetarium sphere to Shanghai’s Dishui Lake reflects the Earth-Sun dynamic, creating a cohesive thematic representation.
Ennead Architects emphasise that “by linking the new museum to both its scientific purpose and the celestial references of buildings throughout history, the exhibits and architecture aim to communicate more than scientific content: they illuminate what it means to be human in a vast and largely unknown universe”. This philosophy is reflected in Roca's bathroom solutions, which complement the museum’s architectural style with clean lines and finishes.
Roca's products in the public bathrooms exemplify innovation and functionality. Since its opening, the museum has welcomed a steady stream of visitors, requiring public spaces that offer both comfort and resilience. Roca's advanced bathroom solutions meet these requirements, creating a clean and aesthetically pleasing environment that contributes to the museum's reputation for excellence.
The Gap WCs, Site and Chic urinals, L20 E faucets, and Berna undercounter basins are made from high quality, stain-resistant materials to ensure durability and ease of maintenance. The sensor technology in the faucets and urinals provides a touch-free solution, improving hygiene and minimising teh risk of spreading bacteria and viruses. These features, combined with their moderm aesthetic, make Roca's products well suited to the demanding environment of a museum, where attention to detail is paramount.
The Shanghai Astronomy Museum serves as a landmark for innovation and learning, harmoniously blending architecture, culture and science. By integtrating advanced technology and durable materials, Roca ensures that the bathrooms maintain high standards of hygiene and aesthetic appeal. This collaboration is an example of how thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship can enhace public spaces
